What a blessing it must be to be deemed a living legend, more importantly imagine the things you will have had to overcome to get there. I will be honest I never knew much about Ruby Dee’s accomplishments until a few years ago. I’ve always known her name and knew she was an actress and a part of the civil rights movement but I didn’t know much more than that. Not until the 2010 Black Girls Rock Awards when she was honored with the Living Legend award and my friend Tracy told me that I remind her of Ruby Dee – I had to find out more about her.
Once I researched her I realized if I live to see 91 my biography would read very similar to hers. She has opened so many doors and paved the way for young people to be able to live in a fair and just world. Her career accomplishments are a testimony to me that I can achieve all that I dream because she has already done it. Her life was extraordinary and I can only hope that I am recognized for my talents the way she was.
Cheers to you Rudy Dee for being a living legend a pioneer and a fearless activist. You will be missed.
