What It Takes

As a writer one of the many writing avenues that I venture down is screenplay writing.  About 8 years ago I took  a stab at writing a dramatic series.  It was inevitable because growing up I was obsessed with Beverly Hills 90210, Dawson’s Creek, Falicity, Party of Five and One Tree Hill.   Even now as an adult I can’t get enough of Scandal and Gray’s Anatomy.

Out of all of the shows that I just named Beverly Hills 90210 and Grey’s Anatomy are the only one’s that were on air for at least ten years.  Shows come and go but do you know what it takes to write a show that runs for ten years on syndicated television?   To keep an audience engaged and captivated for a decade coming back and wanting more, that is longer than a lot of marriages last now-a-days.

That is my dream – to capture an audience and make them love and hate for a lifetime.  I have been thinking about what elements have to go into a show to keep millions of people tuning in for years.  Lets think about Soup Opera’s they have faithful audiences that tune in for a lifetime.  They have love, the villain, the destined couple, the bad guy that you root for, the damsel in distress, the hero, the whore, tragedy and triumph all evenly mixed into a fabulous wedding cake of destruction.  They have their audiences captured, yearning for the next episode, angry of the last cliff hanger but loving the rush that they are filled with.

I want to do this.  I want to be on a list with Fraiser, Grey’s Anatomy, Friends, CSI, Law & Order, Murder She Wrote and Cheers.  I want to live amongst the greats!  And I have the perfect idea to get there.  Come on this journey with me.  I will make it happen.  I have what it takes.
